May-December romances can find that time takes an ever-complicating toll.
The complications were likely to multiply further if the couple in question were two gay men living in the morally frosty waters of the 1950s.
But the English writer Christopher Isherwood and California artist Don Bachardy did endure as a couple, despite encountering some tempests at sea. And the relationship is aptly described in the title of directors Guido Santi and Tina Mascara's documentary "Chris and Don: A Love Story."
