Many of the fathers encouraged women to dress simply and modestly. This advice accorded with the image of elegant simplicity which the Graeco-Roman culture of the ancient Mediterranean world regarded as ideal for aristocratic women. It also expressed the values of Christian ascetic morality. The early third century North African Christian writer Tertullian wrote a treatise on this subject. He argued that the woman of faith should neglect her appearance, imitating the condition of Eve after the Fall, which he equates with the condition of women as such:
She should carry herself around like Eve, mourning and penitent,
that she might more fully expiate by each ...
