Edward J. Cleary, New York State AFL-CIO president, envisions using the combined collective clout of its worker base to obtain low-cost health care for all union members - even if it means setting up a health insurance system for the general public as well.
"Insurance companies should not look at unions as an overwhelming source of income for them," Mr. Cleary said in an interview with National Underwriter. "We don't want to be an insurance company, but there are some things which we feel we could do better."
