More Bits Aren't Always Better
Like their personal computer counterparts, desktop scanner manufacturers generally revamp their products to provide more power for less money over time. Following this trend, the latest batch of low-cost color scanners--the Apple Color OneScanner 1200/30, Agfa's StudioStar, and the Epson Expression 636--support higher bit depths than their predecessors, 30 in the case of Apple and Agfa, 36 in the case of Epson. But are more bits better? Not neces- sarily.
