Santee's recent retail growth, spurt of new home construction, and completion of its first Class A office building makes for strange neighbors for the aging Las Colinas Detention Facility, the county's only jail for women.
However, county officials, desperate to ease overcrowding, want to build an even larger jail.
The $300 million project calls for expanding the site to 45 acres from 15 and increasing the number of beds to 1,216 from 753.
Santee city officials fear expanding the jail would "stymie recent efforts to build up a strong town center and compromise the safety of the community."
