It doesn't take a hurricane long to change the landscape.
Judging by his impact on General Motors and Volkswagen AG, J. Ignacio Lopez qualifies as a force of nature.
He spent only one year as GM's top parts purchaser, and three years as Volkswagen's production chief, a post from which he resigned on Nov. 29.
His departure was triggered by a criminal investigation into charges that he stole secret GM documents in 1993, when he abruptly left GM to join the German automaker.
Attorneys familiar with the case said German authorities may issue indictments within a month.
Lopez said he will become a consultant, and VW continues to pay him.
