Respected ornithologist Mark Anderson was suspended in August, along with two of his colleagues at the Northern Cape Department of Tourism, Environment and Conservation, for sounding the alarm about malfunctioning sewerage works threatening the famed lesser flamingoes at Kamfers Dam in Kimberley and at Northgate, a major housing development on its banks, to which the department recently gave the green light.

Anderson is now the executive director of BirdLife SA, who, together with the Save the Flamingo Association, the Wildlife and Environment Society, as well as local landowners, are appealing against the department's authorisation of Northgate.
