RESEARCH ON COMORBIDITY between balance and anxiety disorders was reviewed in the 2001 special issue of the Journal of Anxiety Disorders (Sklare, Konrad, Master, & Jacob, 2001). Studies have shown that balance disorders are associated with panic disorder, agoraphobia, and acrophobia (Balaban & Thayer, 2001; Pratt & McKenzie, 1958; Sklare, Stein, Pikus, & Uhde, 1990). In addition, vestibular symptoms are common in patients with panic disorder (Jacob, Furman, Durrant, & Turner, 1996), and an epidemiological study revealed the prevalence of vertigo in approximately 35% of anxious participants (Andrade, Eaton, & Chilcoat, 1994).
