NEW YORK - Spurred by four of the largest prescription to over-the-counter conversions, antacid sales have exploded over the past year.
According to Information Resources Inc. (IRI), overall sales of antacids and stomach relief products increased 30.3% to nearly $1.5 billion for the 12 months ended June 30. Unit volume rose 17.%. In chain drug stores, which account for almost 40% of the market, sales shot up 22% and unit volume increased 11%.
"I can't think of any one category that has grown like this," a marketer at Warner-Lambert Co. said earlier this year.
