A set of rattling horns is as familiar to Texans as two-stepping to twin fiddles or chowing down on mesquite-smoked barbecue. This was my early image of whitetail deer hunting in the Lone Star State.
Clashing a pair of antlers together to imitate a buck fight and to attract a dominant deer has various primitive origins, but no region is more closely meshed with the tines than Texas. Rattling is part of the lore and lure of deer hunting in this whitetail-rich state. The salty guns-lingers of the Hill Country and South Texas would wait for a cold, crisp dawn, then slip into the brush and "rattle up" a wall-hanger.
