The National Research Council published the book Science and the Endangered Species Act in 1995. One of the chapter headings was entitled "Areas of Scientific Uncertainty" and dealt with the inadequacy of information on many organisms. This lack of relevant knowledge greatly compromised sound decision making. Nowhere is the problem of inadequate knowledge more obvious than with the invertebrates and the problem surfaces often in the new book by T. R. New, An introduction to invertebrate conservation biology. The lack of the most basic biological and systematic knowledge about many major invertebrate phyla severely impedes conservation efforts.
