Dec 07, 2008 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The efforts of Geoff Dixon, ex-head of Qantas Airways, helped bring about the Australian airline's proposed amalgamation with British Airways. The $A8 billion deal would constitute a significant gamble, unlike the merger with an Asian carrier that Dixon would have preferred. Opposition from two small stockholders thwarted Dixon's attempt to hold an $A11 billion private equity takeover of Qantas.
