Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems Co Ltd and Hitachi Ltd of Japan have developed a high-efficiency motor with iron cores made of amorphous metal, rather than magnets made of rare earth metals (so-called rare-metal magnets) such as Neodymium (Nd) or Dysprosium (Dy).
The efficiency was 86% for a prototype of a 150 W motor, which is usually used in air conditioners, and is an improvement on the performance of Hitachi's existing 150 W motors that use rare-metal magnets, which operate at 81% efficiency, according to the company.
Motors that use amorphous metals are expected to be adopted in a wide range of fields including industrial equipment, consumer ...
