In major-league baseball history, four teams have been fully identified by their nickname _ the ``Hitless Wonders'' (1906 Chicago White Sox), the ``Bronx Bombers'' (1930s New York Yankees), the ``Gas House Gang'' (1934 St. Louis Cardinals), and the ``Whiz Kids'' (1950 Phillies).
The first three won world championships, but none was more beloved than the fourth. Philadelphia-area fans adored the Whiz Kids.
The 1950 Phillies were a young team, put together after World War II under Bob Carpenter, whose father bought the impoverished club late in 1943. Until then, the Phillies had been pathetic, with only one first-division finish from 1917 to 1949. ...
