It's always good when your company's growth exceeds your expectations.

At Blue Sky Pest Control in Mesa, Ariz., projections for growth were modest going into 2008. Owner Curtis Whalen says he noticed an economic slowdown at the end of 2007, so he forecasted his budgets conservatively. But as he watched the numbers from month to month, he suddenly realized his company just might have a good year.

"When we looked ahead to this year, we expected to grow, but thought we might see slower growth because of the economic environment," Whalen says. "We've been pleasantly surprised that we've had a really good growth year."
