Baghdad is to approve a series of national transport projects worth several billion dollars over the coming months.

Aviation, maritime and rail projects are due to be cleared by the Iraqi Planning Ministry in early 2009, with feasibility studies set to get under way by the middle of the year.

Italy's Ciite has been appointed to begin work on a study and masterplan for a port city at Ras al-Bisha on Iraq's Gulf coast. The project is led by Sheikh Josef Hanna, an Iraqi entrepreneur based in Abu Dhabi, who has previously proposed a $15bn dollar overhaul of the country's main existing deep-sea port at nearby Umm Qasr (MEED 14:12:07).
