Environmental activists armed only with wire cutters today exposed the weakness of London s airport security systems. The protesters from a group called Plane Stupid, which opposes airport expansion, cut through a perimeter fence at Stansted airport around 3:15 a.m. local time, and set up camp near the runway.
They shut London s third-busiest airport for five hours, canceled dozens of flights and delayed several thousand passengers. It s the second time this year that demonstrators gained access to supposedly secure runway areas at one of London s four main airports. The incidents underscore the difficulty of keeping the sites secure.
