Increasing medical specialization has resulted in a marked decrease in long-term contact between individual doctors and patients. Fragmentation of care among specialists--one doctor for this complaint, another for that operation--too often means that routine preventive care and health maintenance are neglected. While specialists' services may be needed on occasion, each individual should have a primary-care doctor.
