Jan. 16--Visx Inc. yesterday said it received U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel approval to expand the use of its laser equipment to include the treatment of patients with astigmatism.
The panel's 4-to-3 vote is expected to strengthen the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company's competitive edge over its troubled rival, Summit Technology Inc. of Waltham. Both companies have FDA approval to treat myopia, or nearsightedness, which affects some 60 million Americans who now wear eye glasses or contact lenses.
