After more than two years on the lam, a young Marine planned a cross-country odyssey back to his old world - a trip that would include consultations with a psychiatrist in Virginia, a lawyer in Texas and then, ultimately, a surrender to face desertion charges, he and his father said.
According to Lloyd Hering, his son, Lance Hering, now 23, hatched the plan in recent months, after finally telling his parents where he was - and even apparently spending time with his father at a huge counter-culture gathering in Nevada's Black Rock Desert two months ago.
