Bone Marrow Aspiration
Purpose.
This procedure, also called sternal tap, provides a small amount of bone marrow for analysis and is used to diagnose leukemia and other cancers, to determine whether various cancers have metastasized, and to evaluate the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Although it is primarily used in cancer diagnosis, it can also be used to diagnose several types of anemia and infections.
