The Immune System
Understanding AIDS requires a basic understanding of the immune system: The immune system consists of a group of specialized cells that protect the body against infections and help guard against the growth of some tumors. Infections from most bacterial, viral, and fungal organisms as well as many parasites are usually curtailed by a well-functioning immune system. But when the immune system is compromised and not functioning efficiently, susceptibility to many of these infections and some types of malignancies increases substantially.
