The European Council summit began yesterday afternoon with the Lisbon Treaty top of the agenda.
Here's what happened as Europe's leaders met:
French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who holds the EU Presidency, chaired the meeting.
He said EU leaders had a particularly important agenda for the future of Europe. "First, Europe must function and good functioning would be guaranteed by the Treaty of Lisbon."
After an address by the European Parliament President Hans-Gert Pottering, the agenda moved on to the first working session and the debate on Lisbon.
