Eric Behling as a teen wanted to be a police officer.
He went to Jefferson Community College, got a degree in criminal justice, took the Oswego County sheriff's examination and was called for an interview.
"But it was such a long process waiting for a job to open," said Behling, who grew up on an apple farm in Mexico started by his great-grandfather in the early 1900s. "By then I had settled into the farm business."
Well, the sheriff department's loss was farming's gain. Since then, Behling and his family have grown their business into one of the largest apple and fruit operations in Central New York and the state.
