ISRAELI SETTLERS IN the West Bank, fearful they will be forced to evacuate their colonies under a peace deal, are increasingly turning to violence against the Palestinians, the Israeli Army and leftwing opponents.
Israel's outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned on 28 September that a new ultra-nationalist underground has gone on the offensive inside the Jewish state, raising the spectre of Israelis' worst nightmare: Jew fighting Jew. The liberal daily Haaretz has warned that "the laws of the jungle" are taking over in the West Bank.
