WASHINGTON -- Maria Echaveste, a key figure in the administration's anti-sweatshop campaign, is expected to leave her post at the Labor Department and join the White House as the President's chief advocate in the business community.

A White House announcement of Echaveste's appointment as assistant to the President and director of public liaison could come as early as today, sources said. She will succeed Alexis Herman, tapped by President Clinton last month to become Secretary of Labor, a post vacated by Robert Reich.
