Democratic lawmakers and some automotive experts argue that US carmakers should manufacture more fuel-efficient vehicles that will reduce American dependence on foreign oil in exchange for the massive bridge loan package they are seeking to avoid bankruptcy.

Senate Majority Leader Reid said he expected to finish discussions with the White House Tuesday on a $15 billion rescue plan for US auto companies after Democrats revised their initial plan late Monday.

However, the amount of Republican support in the Senate remains unclear and Reid said there were some remaining issues left to be resolved with the White House before a vote could happen.
