Since 1991, catfish has been on the tables of German restaurants, cafeterias and private homes. Even with a long tradition of fish consumption, it took some determined and creative efforts to introduce and gain acceptance of a new-to-market and largely unknown fish to German diners.
Since a modest shipment of 18 tons in 1991, sales of U.S. catfish to Germany have grown substantially to 238 tons valued at nearly $1.75 million last year, according to industry sales records.
The driving force behind this export success story is the teamwork between The Catfish Institute (TCI) and USDA's Market Access Program (MAP).(1)
