As traffic rises on a given rail line, rail field welds, in particular, are affected by wheel loads and can experience shortened life, leading at a minimum to increased costs and, possibly, to service interruptions.
Dan Gutscher, senior engineer at Transportation Technology Center, Inc., notes that TTCI is investigating improved rail-welding technologies in several areas, including assessment of weld treatment methods that may improve the performance of existing thermite welds, and evaluation of new and improved rail welding technologies as they are introduced by vendors.
