Music fans and world leaders were stunned by the recent death of South African singer and activist Miriam Makeba.

Known worldwide as "Mama Africa," Makeba died of a heart attack after collapsing on stage at the end of a concert in Italy. She was 76.

She was the first Black South African musician to win international fame. She used her celebrity status as a champion against apartheid in South Africa. In 1963, after testifying against apartheid before the United Nations, the South African government revoked her citizenship. She was not allowed to return to South Africa for more than 30 years.
