THE CAKE RECIPE from the back of the Queen Guinevere Cake Flour bag has become my go-to recipe for party cakes of all sorts. At some point, I started wondering just where that anonymous recipe came from. I got this answer from King Arthur Flour: "Sue Gray, our director of product development who's been here for about 12 years, says she developed that recipe about a decade ago here in our Vermont test kitchens 'when we were in search of the quintessential white cake.' She apparently made 'about a million' white cakes in her pursuit of the perfect one - and I guess she finally found it!"
I talked with Gray a few days later.
