GROWING NUMBERS of Americans are struggling to pay their medical bills. An estimated 72 million adults - or 41 percent of working-age adults - reported having problems paying medical bills or had accumulated medical debt last year, up from 34 percent in 2005, according to a survey by the Commonwealth Fund, a health-policy center in New York.
Americans are draining their savings accounts, racking up large credit card debt or sacrificing other basic necessities to pay their bills, the survey found.
