Located about 20 miles north of Nenana, the silty Tanana River winds through the northeastern portion of the Nenana Basin, a relatively unexplored sedimentary basin located about 50 miles west of Fairbanks, believed to hold natural gas. Gas exploration partners Doyon Ltd., Usibelli Energy, Arctic Slope Regional Corp. and Babcock & Brown plan to drill next summer on one of two possible gas targets near the community of Nenana. Work crews will cross the Nenana River to access the remote drill site, using the Doyon Drilling-operated, North Slope-based exploratory drilling rig Arctic Wolf.
