When Union Army Capt. William Collins came through Virginia during the war, it made an impression he didn't forget.
In 1868, three years after the war ended, the New York native came back to the Old Dominion with his new bride and settled in Norfolk.
He wanted to start a business, but wasn't sure how successful he would be as a Carpetbagger. Cleverly, he partnered with a local businessman named Batchelder, selling bricks, horsehair (used in plastering), coal and lumber as "Batchelder & Collins, Inc." on Water Street.
