In response to an abandoned newborn found in Columbia County, Department of Public Welfare Secretary Estelle B. Richman today reminded parents that Pennsylvania's safe haven law allows parents to confidentially turn over unwanted infants, up to 28 days old, to any hospital as an alternative to abandonment (see also Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare).
On Nov. 22, a newborn baby girl was found in a plastic shopping bag in a yard in Berwick. According to authorities, the child was airlifted to Geisinger Medical Center near Danville and treated for exposure to the cold.
