Article: State panel looks to halt human trafficking: commission seeks to make the crime a felony in N.H.(LEGISLATION)(New Hampshire)

Human trafficking for labor or sex occurs in New Hampshire, and a commission is pushing for legislation to improve the state's knowledge and response.

State Pep. Suzanne Harvey, D-Nashua, chaired the commission and will author the 2009 measure to designate human trafficking as a class A felony, carrying up to 15 years in state prison with enhanced jail terms if the victim is younger than 18.

"We want to make sure that New Hampshire is not a safe haven for these activities to take place," Harvey said at a news conference to unveil the report. "Modern day slavery is not specifically addressed by current New Hampshire law."
