NEW YORK -- Mayor Rudolph Giuliani wants to give all New Yorkers a Christmas gift.
Now that last week's tax abeyance event has been declared a resounding success by most retailers and virtually all shoppers, Giuliani is challenging the state legislature to permanently eliminate the apparel sales tax beginning Dec. 1, in time for holiday shopping.
At a press conference Monday at the Manhattan Mall, the mayor also said he would seek to have another week-long exemption of sales taxes on apparel for the back-to-school period, possibly in August.
"I'd like to see it happen today," Giuliani said. "The debate is about when to do it."
