Jan. 30--U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said Wednesday he is seeking public comments on whether to break the connection between the National Cheese Exchange and farm milk prices.
Since last September, farm milk prices have fallen 26 percent. USDA uses the Cheese Exchange in Green Bay as one part of its milk pricing formula. Critics say it is a poor choice.
The USDA comment period is 60 days. It also is beginning a monthly survey of Cheddar cheese prices as a possible substitute for the Cheese Exchange.
Both moves are greatly appreciated, said U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis.
