As a child, Danny Burton had to fight for his life. By the time he was 11, his father, Charles, had dragged the family through 38 states, Canada, and Mexico, beating them along the way. After Charles and his wife separated, he kidnapped and nearly killed her.
Two years later, after he was released from jail, Charles made a final run at the family. Danny responded by grabbing a double-barreled shotgun that stood by the door and pulling the trigger. "I pointed it at him and he left. It's a blessing it wasn't loaded."
