The average grocery shopper these days is tired, stressed out, worried about her bank account, over-scheduled, constantly in the car and at the end of a work day, hungry--and certainly not in the mood to shop for groceries. Throw a couple of kids into the equation, and you have a recipe for a retail meltdown.
