Outside, a large, white sign leans against the brick building of Pruden Hardware Inc. on Carolina Avenue. The letters, large enough to catch the eye of drivers passing by, spell out, "102 birthday 50 percent off."
But it's the one taped to the front door that gets the message across. It reads, "Christmas Schedule, We will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Forever."
"We would have been 103 years old in July if we'd made it," said company president John Brooke Pruden III . "But it's not going to happen."
He sat back in his chair behind the worn wooden desk.
