The Akron Beacon Journal recently published a story, "Burned Alive: Survivors' Story of the Western Reserve Academy Lab Accident," as a follow-up to an incident that took place on January 23, 2006, in a chemistry lab at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. As a result of a chemistry lab fire, several students were seriously burned, including the chemistry teacher's own son. This is a headline nightmare not only for students and parents, but for science teachers as well. How did this tragedy happen and could it have been avoided?
