St. John's wort was more effective than placebo and just as effective as standard antidepressants in treating depression, a Cochrane analysis of 29 studies of almost 5,500 adults with major depression showed.
The meta-analysis also found that those taking St. John's wort, made from extracts of the medicinal plant Hypericum perforatum, experienced fewer side effects than did those on antidepressants. In addition, the results support reviews published between 1995 and 2000 that found treatment with St. John's wort to be more effective than with placebo and similarly effective to standard antidepressants in treating mild to moderate depression, the authors said.
