Feb. 6--Farm milk prices increased 60 cents to $11.94 per hundred pounds in January, halting a decline since September that has seen prices decline by more than 26 percent.
The increase follows recent increases in the price of Cheddar cheese blocks traded on the National Cheese Exchange in Green Bay. That price is one factor used to determine farm milk prices.
Higher butter prices also contributed to the increase, said Ed Jesse, a dairy economist at UW-Madison.
The sudden decline in the minimum price that farmers get for their milk -- from $15.37 in September to $11.34 in December -- has angered state dairy farmers.
