SCOTLAND's children are being given a 'substandard' education due to a drop in the number of teachers, it was claimed last night.

Falling standards in the nation's schools are being compounded by cutbacks that have resulted in fewer teachers in the classroom than at any time in the past three years. espite an SNP promise to cut primary class sizes, cash-strapped councils are saving money by slashing their education budgets.

This has resulted in new official statistics that show there are 1,200 fewer teachers than at the start of the year - and a drop of 700 in the previous three months.
