An information society is defined as one where commerce in information is a characteristic activity. Yet, because this commerce has historically been coupled to advances in information communication technologies, the question of what constitutes an artifact of information--a document--becomes complex. Simultaneously, it gives rise to questions surrounding the human interaction with information: questions of creation, distribution, use, preservation, and loss. Such questions have traditionally been the province of the library and archival professions, which have experienced tremendous technology-driven upheaval within the past forty years.
