This September, the Museum of Arts and Design premiered its new building at 2 Columbus Circle in Manhattan. As with the New Museum's new building in New York half a year earlier, the architecture, physical plan, facilities, exhibition spaces, neighbourhood and siting were subject to intense scrutiny from critics and New York's ardent museum-goers (Fig. 1). Should MAD have left the building as it was, respecting its historical significance, or taken the opportunity to make a strong aesthetic statement by constructing an entirely new edifice?
