MOST of us have heard of the Big Bang - although perhaps few of us can properly understand it.

It is the theory of how the universe began in a gigantic explosion about ten billion years ago.

Now, scientists say a Highland beach has yielded evidence of a 'second big bang' - about 500million years ago - which may have triggered a host of new life forms on Earth.

Experts from Aberdeen University have discovered tiny particles which originated in space embedded in rocks along the shore near Durness in Sutherland.
