Feb. 4--The first Web site devoted to life in New York City, struggling because it hasn't been able to attract enough online advertising, was gobbled up by America Online yesterday for $5 million.
Digital City, an AOL company that has been developing a network of city-based sites, is keeping the staff of Total New York -- which was started in 1994 as an online guide to the Big Apple.
WP Studio, the operator of the Total New York site, will create online material for Digital City, which operates electronic guides to 13 cities. The guides are available through America Online. It plans to expand to the Internet's World Wide Web later this year.
