As much as we have made tremendous strides in the battle against heart disease in the last 3o years, much remains to be understood. Application of our new drugs and technology require that heart disease patients be promptly identified at an early disease stage to benefit. Unfortunately, half of all heart attacks and cardiac deaths occur silently and/or unpredictably, often precluding use of these therapies. Only further understanding of the mechanisms and triggers causing heart disease will help us to prevent these heart attacks and deaths.
